Ten Top Tips For Things To Do

A visit to Kilmartin House Museum The village of Kilmartin is less then a mile and a half away. This small local museum has won a number of awards for both concept and its architecture. It has displays of artifacts from nearby sites dating back over 5,000 years. There are plenty of ‘hands on’ things for children to do. It also houses a café serving lunches and snacks and a restaurant open for bookings Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
A picnic at Crinan Ferry This is the nearest sandy beach and is ideal for safe paddling, swimming, games and picnics. When the tide is very low you can have a fun walk across to the island opposite the beach.
A walk to the top of Dunadd Hill. This is a climb that will take you no more than twenty minutes and will reward you with a magnificent view of the whole of the ancient Moine Mhor are which is locally known as The Moss. The river Add meanders through this flat plain and the top of this Hill is where the early kings were crowned.
A visit to Carnasserie Castle. You can explore the battlements and secret rooms of this fortified house and enjoy the huge fireplace in this roofless but well preserved ruin. The views gained from the top make the climb up all the stone steps in the spiral staircase well worthwhile.
Take a boat trip
. There are a number of companies offering trips. Hold of your breath and be taken through the whirlpools of the Gulf of Corryvreckan!Visit one of Argyll’s famous gardens.
Cnoc-Na-Garrie is a local garden open as part of Scotland’s Garden Scheme. Situated two miles south of Kilmartin the garden has been created from rough hillside alpines, shrubs and herbaceous plants. The admission charge of £2.00 goes to charity and there’s the opportunity to buy plants.A visit to Crinan Basin
. This is where the canal enters the sea. There is a coffee shop and plenty of boats to see. The somewhat rusty Vital Spark, featured in the Para Handy TV show is usually lying in the basin also the Vic32 puffer. Walk or cycle along the tow path and watch the boats manoeuvre through the locks.Hire a bike.
The bike shop in Lochgilphead hires bikes and there are a number of forestry tracks that can be followed by bike.Standing Stones & Ancient Monuments.
There are at least 150 prehistoric sites within six miles of the village of Kilmartin. Including the stone circle at Temple Wood just outside Slockavullin.Go for a swim
. Should the outdoor life become too much take a trip to the pool in Lochgilphead.
